MWWA President; Mrs Faten El Dana; Australia Day message

Australia Day is a national public holiday which is celebrated annually on the 26th of January. Contemporary Australia day has come to reflect on the diversity of the nation’s population and its beautiful natural landscape. On this historical day, many activities take place showcasing multicultural community and family barbeques/events, reflections on Australian history, community awards ceremonies, and citizenship ceremonies welcoming new immigrants into the Australian community.

Nevertheless, there is still a lot of work to be done and on Australia Day we should not only focus on this nation’s past, but also consider its future. With approximately 200,000 permanent migrants entering Australia every year it is important that we have fresh dialogues about cultural understanding in order to generate a sense of community harmony and social cohesion. This can only be achieved by confronting the serious ramifications of extremism and challenging racist attitudes within our nation. In Contemporary Australia, there simply is no place for extremism and racism in such a multicultural diverse society.

On behalf of MWWA Members and supporters we wish all Australians a happy Australia Day and we hope that our upcoming events will help foster intercultural understanding and inclusiveness in the community.
